That’s What She Said: A History
There has been a lot of speculation as to the origins of “that’s what she said.” Where did “that’s what she said” come from? Who invented “that’s what she said?” Can anyone claim to have invented the phrase? Who said the first “that’s what she said” on film? JustWhatSheSaid.com did some investigating:
#1: Wayne’s World (1992)
The first “that’s what she said” joke to appear on film occurred on Wayne’s World in 1992. Garth, tired of holding up a picture, grumbles “Hey, are you done yet? Cause I’m getting tired of holding this!” Wayne quips back, “Yeah! That’s what she said,” causing both of them to snicker.
#2: Beverly Hills Ninja (1997)
I still remember this simple “that’s what she said” line from Beverly Hills Ninja being repeated over and over in high school. A one-main dialogue by the great, late Chris Farley, as he is rambling on and annoying his captors:
“Okay, let’s take the blindfold off. That’s what she said. She said!”
#3: Family Guy – Emission Impossible (2001)
In 2001, “that’s what she said” got another boost from Family Guy. This memorable “that’s what she said” moment occurred when Brian and Peter were attempting to build a crib together:
#4: King of the Hill: That’s what she said (2004)
In this episode, Hank Hill welcomes a new employee to his office. The worker introduces “that’s what she said” to the office to the delight of everybody but Hank. However, as time goes by, the new guy’s relentless “that’s what she said”-ing and other pranks force everybody to become so careful of what they say and do, that they cannot function at work.
#4: The Office (2005)
And then came The Office. The show that rocketed “that’s what she said” to stardom through Michael Scott’s relentless barrage of workplace “that’s what she said” jokes.
Which of his predecessors was his inspiration? Family Guy? King of the Hill? Wayne’s World? All seem equally likely.

EPIC!!! Haha nice summary!
I have never seen a history like this! This is hilarious. Who knew?? King of the Hill!
@Jim
I saw that episode! It was great. Did not know that family guy ever had a part in TWSS though!
Good summary, but I still think that 90% of the success of “TWSS” goes to The Office
@Craig
well yeah; but the point is that they didn’t invent it. I knew I vaguely remembered hearing “thats what she said” a few times before it was on Office
“It’s easy to get in but hard to rise up. Thats what she said!!”
lol
oh my god I can’t believe its been five years of the office already
@marie
I know! I was shocked when I realized season 1 was all the way back in 2005. Time flies…
Anyone watch Scrubs?
The Todd always was cracking “thats what she said” in most of the episodes, I’m surprised this wasnt mentioned considering that the show has been arround since 2001
This isn’t really something new. My friends and I got tired of “That’s What She Said” jokes in 1980. We kept saying them anyway. The more tired of them we got, the funnier they were.
I first heard “that’s what she said” from joel hodgson on the tv show “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The opening segment of the episode “Daddy-O” has joel say the famous line in response to what Tom Servo said.
